Utopia | The sundowner
Seats here are highly sought-after, particularly when the sun starts to go down, being Plaka’s only bar with an alfresco terrace overlooking the Aegean. Jazz, RnB and Greek ballads are the music mainstays. Whilst you enjoy cocktails with their speciality local cheese platter to watch the sun casting a burnt sienna glow on the sea.
Utopia, Plaka, Milos, 848 00, Greece
Milos is slowly being discovered for its undulating white cliffs at Sarakiniko, the deep-green swimming holes, and colourful, tiny boat houses wedged between rock and sea. The landscape has been shaped by the minerals such as obsidian, alum, barite and sulphur, which still bubble up in the islands many hot springs.
Over half of the 78 beaches around Milos are not accessible by land. Take advantage of the opportunity to beach-hop at your leisure, seeking out secret swimming spots like Gerakas, where the sea is an eye-watering shade of cyan. Some of our favourite spots include peaceful
Alogomandra beach, location northeast where locals gather. Be sure to arrive early to find a shady spot on the fine sand below a partially-collapsed cave. Gerontas beach is where fewer venture to, but the waters here are deep and tranquil and the sand volcanic.
Sail further to dreamy Sykia and Kleftiko where you can take in views of syrmata villages before dropping anchor for a snorkel within the wondrous Sykia sea cave.
Take a deeper dive (scuba gear needed) to explore former pirate hideout Kleftiko’s limestone cliffs. Follow the vibrant volcanic seabed or inspect the Africa shipwreck off Sarakiniko. You may even spot a Mediterranean monk seal, one of the world’s rarest marine mammals.
